As a collective of concerned citizens, we are demanding real and lasting change within Memphis Shelby County Schools. Trust has been broken, and it cannot be rebuilt without real change. For years, families have been asked to rely on a system that has not shown results.

The most recent audit and ongoing issues only confirm what families have been saying for years: there are deeper, more pervasive problems that are negatively impacting our community’s children. Resources are not always reaching classrooms, and the district is consistently not working as it should.

This is not about politics. This is about our children. Right now, too many are being left behind because of chronic mismanagement. The issue is not our teachers or principals. They are doing everything they can with what they have. The problem is years of poor governance, inconsistent leadership, and a lack of accountability at the board and leadership level.

We’ve seen it all at this point:

  • Constant leadership turnover and instability

  • Public infighting and dysfunction at board meetings

  • Decisions that don’t translate into real support for classrooms

  • A lack of transparency around how decisions are made and how money is spent

  • Major plans are currently being paused or reversed due to unstable leadership contracts, leaving the district without clear, consistent direction.

Because of this, we support a state intervention that happens in collaboration with the community. The situation is too urgent, the issues too pervasive, and the impact too significant not to take bold steps towards improvement.

This affects every single person in our community. This issue goes beyond the school district. It affects workforce readiness, economic growth, public safety, and, ultimately, the future of Memphis.

This is a moment for all of us to step up and demand better.
